Iceberg Surveillance

C-CORE offers a maritime monitoring service using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites.  The service provides day/night, all-weather, large-area reconnaissance specifically for detection and classification of icebergs.  The process is automated using C-CORE’s proprietary Iceberg Detection Software (IDS).   IDS is designed to work autonomously to detect and classify icebergs and vessels, independent of ocean and weather conditions. C-CORE’s team of specialists provide 24/7 quality control, so clients get near-real-time information in a format customized to their specifications. Surveillance plans for regions of interest are also developed specifically for each client.

C-CORE continually updates its software and processes to integrate new sensors and new capabilities. 100% classification accuracy has been achieved using quad-polarization data, while over 95% classification accuracy has been achieved with dual-polarization modes.

A recent development is improved ability to detect icebergs in sea ice. The image at left shows a tabular iceberg moving through sea ice, detected and extracted by C-CORE from COSMO-SkyMed imagery, April 2013. The detection was confirmed by aerial photography of the location.
