Managing Ice Risk

Since the mid-1970s, C-CORE has helped industries implement new technologies to manage the risks associated with operating in ice environments. Our ice engineers contribute to the design and operation of a variety of installations in ice environments - particularly in the oil and gas, pipeline, fishery and aquaculture sectors. We provide engineering research and development in risk analysis, finite element and numerical analysis, field studies and ice laboratory testing.

Technical Focus

C-CORE's ice engineering activities occur in all regions of the arctic and subarctic and are concentrated in four key areas:

  • Ice management and detection: Helping industry and government agencies operate safely and efficiently in marine environments where ice or icebergs pose threats to operations
  • Ice risk: Examining uncertainties associated with marine structures, seabed installations and pipelines in ice infested waters
  • Ice conditions: Monitoring conditions such as pack ice, icebergs and atmospheric ice
  • Ice loading: Determining the impact forces of icebergs and sea ice loads on structures

Technical Resources

C-CORE's highly trained and experienced staff has the benefit of additional intellectual capital through our collaborative partnerships with industry, institutes and universities. As well, we have superior specialized facilities, including cold rooms and refrigerated centrifuge capability.
